Case Study: A Vision. No Product. One Shot at a Successful Launch.
Electra Aero came to us with a significant challenge: to launch their next-generation production aircraft at a reveal event that would be attended by hundreds from the aerospace world, even though they only had a small-scale prototype aircraft to show. Our solution was to blur the boundaries of the physical and digital world by shining a literal spotlight on their prototype aircraft which was positioned next to a massive LED screen. When the event started, the house lights went out and the screen came on: showing a digital version of the prototype on the LED screen, now positioned next to a shrouded version of the production aircraft, which we then revealed. This blurring of the physical with the digital left the audience with the sense that the production aircraft, which won’t exist for years, was already in the sky.
The story of Electra, told by those who built it.
One of the challenges that Electra faced in telling the story of their company was that although its employees were some of the most brilliant aerospace engineers alive, they were not used to speaking on camera. Previous attempts to bring them out of their shells had resulted in videos that seemed scripted. To get them out of their heads, we placed an iPad teleprompter on the lens of the camera. But instead of text, we connected the feed to Zoom so that the director could speak directly to the subjects. They forgot the camera was there, and were soon talking passionately about the fascinating process they used to create one of the most promising aircraft technologies in decades. Combined with footage we filmed of the prototype production process and initial testing, it was easy for our editor to create a compelling origin story complete with the nail-biting maiden flight of the prototype.
Flying in a non-existent aircraft
One of Electra’s biggest challenges was convincing investors and those who purchase aircrafts that their technology – which only existed as a prototype – would be appealing to the general public. In order to show what the typical use case for a general traveler might be, we again blurred the lines between the digital and physical world and composited a 3-D version of the production aircraft over video footage, making it appear the aircraft was already in service.
First, let me again thank you for the wonderful work you’ve already done on behalf of Electra. All three videos at the launch were excellent, hit just the right notes, and really elevated the event to a higher, more professional level. Many guests have commented on the event, with one saying it’s the best aircraft rollout they’ve ever attended! So thank you for contributing in such a central way to our success.
